South
Asian Youth Action (SAYA!) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization
founded in 1996 with the mission to create social change
and opportunities for South Asian youth to realize their
fullest potential. It is the only organization in New
York City dedicated to providing secular and comprehensive
youth development services to the Citys fast-growing
South Asian community. With 40 full-time and part-time
staff and a budget of $1.3 million, SAYA! serves over
600 low-income and immigrant youth at six locations across
Queens.
Development
and Communications Manager
Position
Summary
Working
closely with the Executive Director, the Manager will
help SAYA! achieve financial growth and security, and
work to raise the organization's profile in New York
City.
The
manager will develop and implement a long-term fund-raising
plan to keep SAYA!'s exciting programs running and enable
new programs to benefit South Asian youth. He or she
will develop relationships and write grants to government
agencies, foundations and corporations. In addition,
he or she will expand SAYA's individual donor giving
base through special events, planned giving and e-philanthropy.
He
or she will also execute an effective marketing and
branding strategy by expanding the organization's online
presence, securing media coverage of programs and SAYA!
youth, and producing effective promotional collateral.
The
successful candidate is someone who can develop and
maintain relationships with funders and the media, a
talented writer, and is an effective project manager
with a keen attention to detail. He or she is
a creative thinker able to work both independently and
collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
Development
- Work
with Executive Director to develop SAYA!’s strategic
fundraising & marketing goals.
- Strengthen
department’s infrastructure by developing processes
and practices for efficiently managing work flow.
- Develop,
write and submit winning grant proposals.
- Monitor
existing grants and produce reports.
- Cultivate
and strategically manage relationships with donors
and prospective funding sources; identify new donors
among individuals, foundations, corporations and government
sources.
- Manage
1-3 staff and interns.
- Develop
budgets for proposals and financial expenditure statements
for funders.
Communications
- Develop
marketing and other external communications materials
for multiple stakeholders, including brochures, event
invites, press releases, newsletters and annual reports;
maintain and update the organization’s website
social network tools.
- Coordinate
annual and e-philanthropy appeals, special events
and organizational fundraisers.
- Represent
SAYA! at networking events and external speaking engagements,
including policy forums.
- Contribute
to articles and policy-related research on South Asian
youth development.
- Work
with Executive Director in managing all facets of
external affairs work, as necessary including: project
management, special events, preparation for Board
of Directors meeting and special projects.
Qualifications
- Strong
writing and oral communication skills.
- Ability
to multitask, work under tight deadlines and deal
with high-level pressure.
- Highly
organized, self-motivated, strategic thinker with
excellent interpersonal skills.
- Skilled
in Windows, Word, Excel, databases and internet research.
- Experience
with event planning.
- Proven
commitment to and knowledge of the South Asian community
and/or youth development a plus.
- Bachelor
degree and 3 to 5 years experience working in a fundraising
and/or marketing environment; graduate degree a plus.
