South Asian Youth Action (SAYA!) is a fast growing non-profit community-based organization dedicated to providing and advocating for the necessary supports and opportunities to ensure the success of low-income South Asian youth in New York City. Our programs, which are offered at schools and sites across Queens, include leadership development, academic support and college preparation, employment training and placement, sports and artistic opportunities, as well as counseling and general social support.

Position Summary:  SAYA! is seeking creative, dedicated, reliable, and committed individuals to lead our after-school programs in two high school sites in Queens during the school year.  Group Leaders and Assistant Group Leaders implement after-school curricula and activities that complement the offerings of each youth’s regular school-day and help enhance their skills and talents to reach their full potential.   

 

Responsibilities:

·    Ensure engagement, participation, and consistent attendance of youth enrolled in activities

·    Plan and facilitate purposeful and engaging activities and group projects

·    Establish rapport with youth and provide mentoring, guidance and overall direction for their leadership development, artistic skills, physical activity engagement and academic progress

·    Provide assistance with homework and encourage academic progress; feel comfortable providing homework help

·    Collaborate constructively with coworkers, and communicate regularly with supervisory staff

·    Participate in training and staff development activities several times per month outside of program hours

·    Serve as a positive role model and uphold professional behavior

·    Submit regular program reports, attendance sheets and other administrative duties assigned

 

Core Qualifications:

·    College and/or Graduate students preferred; teaching artists and/or prior experience working in a relevant field (Youth Development, Education, Social Work, Arts, Sports)

·    Interest and experience in creating interactive and educational/artistic activities

·    A genuine enthusiasm for developing professional skills through training opportunities and field practice

·    Strong interest and experience in youth development, academic enrichment and arts

·    Availability between  2:00 – 6:00; 15 hours per week Monday-Friday during the school year

·    Ability to work as part of a team with the school community

·    Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with a broad range of people including school staff, parents, volunteers, and others

·    Flexibility, with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances

 

Compensation: commensurate with experience.
